Swan River

Swan River

In the nineteenth century, Australia didn’t exist as a nation, but as a number of British colonies. In 1901 we became a nation, and the Swan River Colony became Western Australia.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if six years earlier gold hadn’t been discovered near Kalgoorlie, the rest of Australia wouldn’t have cared if we joined them or not. East coast snobs!

But gold was discovered…and I can’t resist using that boomtown time as the setting for my steampunk novella. You’ll discover, though, that at heart I remain a secessionist.

West coast pride!
