Tatterdemalion

I don’t know how the word “tatterdemalion” failed to enter my vocabulary earlier, but it is now “Word of the Weekend”! I read it in a review in the Guardian Weekly and immediately thought of a ragged lion. Very visual word. And it means what it sounds, all raggedy like a ragamuffin.

I’ve been meaning to share a photo of my mizuna seedlings for a few days. They’re shooting up fast. You’ll notice they’re a bit clumped together. The seed packet said they’d nearly reached their expiry date, so I thought there might be some failure and I wasn’t too careful about spacing. Some failure!

  1. I'm biding my time to set my plants out. We've had some snap freezes only to be back to normal the next day. If it can hold steady, I might take the chance next week.

I've never tried mizuna. How would you describe the taste? Is it sweet or bitter?

    • Um, kind of like rocket, kind of like a really mild dandelion leaf. Very green tasting, which is an unhelpful comment if ever there was one! What surprised me is how nice the mustard spinach is — like a very mild nasturtium leaf; a hint of pepper.
