I swear I write, but the weather is lovely today and it is a public holiday, so I popped out and bought some gorgeous flowers.
I hope the photo shows you the astonishing green colour of the carnations, but I have a feeling it bleached out. Oh well, you’ll just have to trust me. It’s an astonishing colour, so I’ve snipped off the bottom of the carnation stems and I’m hoping to strike the cuttings.
And since I was in the garden taking photos, here are my daikon. They look scarily like weeds.
The tomatoes are going well, though the fruit doesn’t want to ripen. You can just see the blurry orange colour through the leaves.
You’d think the disaster with the okra would have taught me not to try to grow things out of season, but no. Here is my new Chinese gooseberry plant.
I started Brodie and Sophie’s story — the one that is going to be a full length novel. Eek! — but realised I’d been too nice to them again; i.e. not enough conflict. So I’ve thrown out the false start, sat down and brainstormed some heart breaking life events for my poor couple, and I’m all ready to go, go, go … tomorrow! 🙂

The carnations are gorgeous! I've never tried rooting them. Did you use root stimulator? I can sometimes start new roses if I use that root hormone.
And good for you for trying to grow veggies out of season I always try. I overwintered several veggies last year. The only one that didn't make it was the eggplant.
I've never started roses. Hmm. Carnations are generally easy, though that's often "famous last words". If you can find a side shoot on a stem, they're the best, but the flower seller (who was also the grower. His old tractor was hiding behind the back of the shed) reckons even the stems will work. And no, I don't use root hormone, just a splash of seaweed concentrate in the watering can when I water them in.
Over-wintering veggies seems the way to go. Last winter Dad planted broadbeans and it took so long to get cold that the plants were flowering but not setting beans. Grrr.
The carnations are just gorgeous. They are my favourite flower. I do hope the cuttings 'take' for you. I'm afraid my gardening skills are very hit and miss but nothing tastes better than something you've taken fresh from the garden. 🙂

I love carnations, too. The scent of home grown ones is just wonderful … no glasshouses for me! Apparently the flowers are even edible, but don't trust me on that one. I did try a petal once (I swear I was a goat in a previous life! eat anything) and it was peppery and maybe a little bit sweet.
