A Winter Weekend

Winter in Western Australia is definitely not without colour. The birds are loving the current grevillea flowering.

I’ve hit the winter sales and am now all shopped out. I have limited shopping zen, especially when it comes to shoe shopping, so it’s nice to have that done.

The Romance Writers of Australia conference is happening in two months. Eek! Somehow I don’t think I’m going to get a second novel written and ready to pitch in that time — which is a relief. Ssshh. Don’t tell anyone how cowardly I am, but actually going to my first writers’ conference will be stressful enough without adding pitching to editors and agents to my To Do List.

I’ve decided to attend the conference “Nautical or Nice” themed cocktail party as a pirate. That’s pretty daring for me…and helped along by the fact that I found the perfect pirate shirt. I’ll be the short, shy pirate in the corner.

I sub’d a short story to Asimov’s SF magazine. Aiming high! I mentioned it on Twitter, but forgot to do so, here. This is the story which mixed Neanderthals and quantum computing, not to mention multi-dimensional travel.

I can’t keep calling Brodie and Sophie’s story “Brodie and Sophie’s story”, so it’s working title is now “Hero Duty”. Here’s a snippet from the intro:

The dogs had stopped barking, but she still wanted to cut and run.

If she ran now, she’d never stop.

“Sergeant Carlton?” she asked quietly.

  1. You'll have to blacken a tooth or two. Your smile is too lovely to pass for a pirate. 🙂

Good luck with your submission, not that I think you'll need it and I love your working title.

    • LOL the blackened tooth thing … maybe I could have squid ink pasta for dinner — not that I ever have, but… 🙂

Titling anything is so difficult. Way more difficult that coming up with a first line for a story. Thank goodness for editors who help with stuff like that 🙂

    • Aaargh! (that's pirate for, "flee, they have cameras") but very possibly there will be photos. I've been watching Lori Foster's conference on Twitter (that sounds weird) and everyone seems to tweet photos at these conferences so chances are high that even my dedicated camera-avoidance will fail 🙂
