Overwhelmed by Love – Reverse Harem

One of the big trends in paranormal romance over the last year has been reverse harem – what used to be called menage – and what some authors are calling why choose? romance.

reverse harem paranormal romanceSome of these novels – and they’re often a series of novels with the relationships developing over perhaps three or five books – are sweetly chaste. Others are erotic.

One of the things I think about (obsess over) as an author is why a trend arises and what sustains it. With reverse harem, I suspect there are a couple of things. Perhaps there is a thrill of naughtiness for some people in reading about polyamorous love, but I’m putting that aside. Lots of things can be thrilling without becoming a trend.

With reverse harem, I believe readers are searching for a sense of being overwhelmed by love. Unconditional love. Love that treasures every aspect of you. Love that never tires, never breaks, that nurtures and sustains itself. Of course you don’t need multiple lovers to experience that kind of love, but the reverse harem novel lets readers explore an overwhelming, multi-faceted love. They present the fantasy of a woman’s every intimate desire being met – and I use desire in the sense of emotional need as well as sexual experience.

So, why this desire for super-love? There is a parallel with the stories of superheroes. When life feels bleak, the struggle is hard and we don’t know who to believe in, enter the exaggerated hero. It is the real, unacknowledged heroes of daily life that we rely on, but sometimes the fantasy of a superhero reassures us. When you draw characters and relationship challenges larger than life, we can see what we really want. And all romance novels celebrate the fundamental human desire to love and be loved.

I’m not sure what the trends in publishing will be in 2019, but when I have my guesses organised, I’ll post them!

  1. Looking forward to your guesses for the 2019 trends as I’m not sure where things are headed either. Cosy mysteries is something new to me, and rural romance still seems popular, but it will be interesting to see how things go. 🙂

    • It’s hard this year. I feel like some subgenres (like rural romance) have peaked, but they’re still holding ground; like big trees in the forest, they’re shading out the seedlings. Trying to guess which seedlings will survive and thrive is tough!
