Release Day: Cajole by Jenny Schwartz

Cajole is out today! Buy link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09MVP5X4Z/

If life on the border was complicated, life on Capitoline is insane. Nora and Liam struggle to reconcile her abilities and his duty, while caught up in the dangerous games of the powerful.

Political intrigue, family drama, and ancient alien technology combine in the fourth novel of the Human Sector.

Cajole is the fourth book in my science fiction series, The Adventures of a Xeno-Archaeologist. Resolve is the fifth and final book, and is out June 29 (pre-order link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09MVPF6TR/ ).

I’m starting a spin-off series from the Uncertain Sanctuary series (the House books) in September, Any House in a Storm. Think Beauty & the Beast in an otherworldly, space-traveling darkhouse. But you’ve never met a Beast quite like this one, nor a Beauty quite so brazen in her trespassing. Lots of fun!

A few weeks ago, someone asked me about my writing process, and I thought some of you might be interested in the answer.

I start with the kernel of an idea, but until it’s hooked to a character, the story doesn’t come alive. I’m a character-driven writer, and a discovery one, which means that rigid, detailed outlines don’t work for me. I scrawl a few pages of notes, then write myself into the story, adding to the notes until the whole plot hangs together.

I record details in a series notebook (you’d laugh at my wobbly sketches and maps), which is a lazy person’s version of a story bible. Working notes, the things to be written in the next day or two get scrawled as prompts, and thrown away once written. Rather than focus on things that need to be added or fixed, I pop them onto a to-do list. That frees me to keep writing. Story first, always!

My general advice to anyone and everyone who mentions writing to me is – write what engages you by whatever method feels right. It should add to your life, otherwise – opportunity cost – do something else that does.

  1. I love hearing other authors’ writing processes. It’s wonderful to hear all the different ways we create our stories.:) Wonderful writing advice too.

  2. Jenny, Thank you for this latest installment of Nora and Liam’s story. I really enjoyed the evolution of Dominic, and the introduction of some new people. Down with the queens! While I am waiting I am currently rereading the House books. They are so enjoyable. I do tend to reread a number of your series in times of stress. Currently wondering what a happy ending would be for Austin in Old School. Enjoy your fall. My friend in New Zealand is harvesting her apple tree. Here in Northern California we have buds on the tree!
