    Since I’m talking so much about Western Australia on this blog — it being the setting of my steampunk novella — I thought I should share the Art Gallery of Western Australia. You can search their collection, and it’s a good one, for gems like McCubbin’s “Down on His Luck“.

  • Library Treasures

    Treasures from the World’s Great Libraries is an old exhibition, but the images and info continue to intrigue. There is something about the handwritten letters of people who changed history that is curiously personal, even through the distance of the internet and computer screen.

  • Automatons

    To me, intricate, beautiful automatons are part of the appeal of Steampunk. The Kunsthistorisches Museum has these amazing (and early) examples as well as “curiosities”. And the carriages, wow! Not to mention the musical instruments collection…

    Waxworks always strike me as a very Victorian entertainment. They’re interesting, but kind of creepy. (Although if you really want to talk creepy, you should look at how Victorians used taxidermy. They’d do things like stuff kittens and set them up as if at a tea party, in costume!
