Jayne Ann Krentz is one of my favourite authors. Canyons of Night is her latest book, written as Jayne Castle. I’ve reviewed it over at Goodreads, but what I want to talk about here is a couple of characteristcs that I think make her books such reliably good reads.

1.  The heroine has a life readers can imagine living. She is connected to her community. She’s not waiting to be rescued. When you meet a Jayne Ann Krentz heroine, you meet a potential friend.

2.  Jayne Ann Krentz writes with clarity and a touch of humour. She has great dialogue. It is easy to follow. Its style is reminiscent of old romantic comedy movies. It captures the courtship dance even as the suspense plot advances.

As a writer, there’s so much to learn from these books. More and more I believe effortless reading is the result of an author’s (and editor’s) hardwork and craft skills. It only makes me enjoy the books more!
