Embrace The Romance – Guest Post by Veronica Scott

I seldom have guest posts, but Veronica Scott is one of my favourite author people. We met back in the days when Harlequin’s Carina Press was just a baby and we’ve chatted online ever since. Veronica is awesome. As well as publishing fabulous romances, she provides a wonderful reader service with a weekly update on new releases in science fiction and fantasy romance at her blog. Add in my obsession with discovering great new books in Kindle Unlimited (Amazon’s book subscription service) and you’ll see why I’m so excited to have Veronica visit. She has some fantastic news and it involves a heart-warming cause.

EMBRACE THE ROMANCE: PETS IN SPACE 3, Moving to Kindle Unlimited

By Veronica Scott

Thanks for having me as your guest to talk about USA Today Best Selling Embrace the Romance: Pets In Space 3 and our decision to move the title out of ‘wide’ distribution and into Kindle Unlimited for its final two months of availability, starting November 1st.

This is our third year to do an anthology featuring pets in a science fiction romance setting, with our first priority to donate a portion of the proceeds to nonprofit Hero-Dogs, Inc., which provides service dogs to US veterans in need. Our second hope is to introduce new readers to the science fiction romance genre and to the other books by our authors. Many of the authors each year will write a story that connects to one of their existing series, but stands alone nicely as an enjoyable read of course. Anna Hackett gave us one this year set in her Galactic Gladiators world, for example, and Tiffany Roberts wrote one featuring characters from her Kraken series.

The first two years we kept the ebook wide on all major sellers’ platforms and didn’t utilize the KU selling platform. In an attempt to be responsive to the changing marketplace, this year we felt it was a better business decision for us, for Hero Dogs and for the loyal KU readers of a number of our authors, to move into KU after October.

Pauline Baird Jones, my co-organizer, and I only have the rights to the stories for a very limited time, after which the rights revert to the authors. Some of the stories do get re-released each year, but not all, so we urge readers to snap up the anthology if they want to be sure of having all eleven stories to read. We’re constantly getting requests from readers for where they can get PISA 1 and PISA2 but once the contract with the authors ends, so does the availability! We have a page on our website where we provide links to the re-released stories that we know of. (Both of my previous PISA novellas have been re-released!)

A glimpse at our logic this year:

If KU readers really enjoy the book, they won’t return it because they know once it is gone, they can no longer get the anthology.

KU readers know their purchase goes to help hero-dogs.org.

Once the anthology is off sale, KU readers will no longer be able to access it if they have read it. We recommend purchasing PISA3 to avoid disappointment when they want to reread the stories and discover they no longer have access to them.

To wait and buy individual titles will be costly. $4.99 for 11 new stories is incredible value, especially when a reader might pay that for just one ebook, particularly if the author is not in KU.

Here’s what we’re also saying in our newsletter: Embrace the Passion: Pets in Space 3 is in a committed relationship! PISA3 is available only on Amazon (as of November 1st) and only for a limited time! You can read it for free in KU or buy it for only $4.99 so you always have a copy when PISA3 leaves Amazon soon.

With over 70 reviews and 4.7*, Pets in Space 3 is an out of this world keeper! Download a copy today!

My story in the anthology is STAR CRUISE: MYSTERY DANCER and has a definite ‘Anastasia’ vibe! Here’s the overview:

Tassia Megg is a woman on the run after the death of her elderly guardian. Her search to get off the planet in a hurry comes when chance directs her to an open dance audition for the luxury cruise liner Nebula Zephyr’s resident troupe. If there is one thing Tassia can do, it is dance!

Security Officer Liam Austin is suspicious of the newest performer to join the Comettes. She shows all the signs of being a woman on the run and seems to fit the Sectors-wide broadcast description of a missing thief, accused of stealing priceless artifacts. As he gets to know Tassia during the cruise, he starts to wonder if she’s something more – a long vanished princess in hiding from deadly political enemies of her family perhaps? And what’s the story with the three-eyed feline companion other crew members swear Tassia brought aboard the ship? Does the animal even exist?

As the ship approaches its next port of call, all the issues come to a boil and Liam must decide if he’ll step in to help Tassia or betray her. Life is about to get very interesting aboard the Nebula Zephyr as Liam tries to uncover the truth. Could F’rrh, the peculiar alien cat he has been hearing about, be the key to the mystery and Tassia’s fate?

A quick excerpt:

Liam made quick work of the new employee processing. The girls were tired but excited and several attempted to flirt with him as he checked their travel papers, guild memberships and the like. He stayed politely distant, in professional mode. Most had worked a cruise liner before so they knew what he needed and supplied the information without prompting.

When Tassia came to sit in the chair across the table from him, she sat straight backed, outwardly serene and composed.

“Congratulations,” he said. “Tough audition process the Comettes management put you through today. I was pulling for you.”

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity.” She brought out the folder with her papers, which she retrieved from a ratty backpack across the room in a pile where all the other girls had stacked their bags.

He raised his eyebrows a bit. “Actual paper? Haven’t seen this in a long time.”

“It’s all in order and has the proper holo seal.” She tapped one finger on the spot. She watched him, her amazing blue-and-copper colored eyes wide. He had the feeling deep inside she was terrified, and he wished he could reassure her.

Liam examined the documents once and then a second time. On the surface they appeared fine. The Sectors allowed for identification to be presented in all forms as long as the required holos were present. Some star systems were less technically advanced than others. Others had religious reasons for presenting ID one way versus another. But all his well-honed instincts from years in the military and working security details told him these were fake papers, this woman was in a lot of trouble, and he probably had no business allowing her onto the Nebula Zephyr.
