Planning For 2020

2020 is going to be an awesome year! *shakes pixie dust everywhere* At least I hope it will.

Amazon has just changed its rules for self-published authors (people like me), so that we can now put books up for pre-order a year in advance. It used to be three months.

After shrieks of excitement. Okay, actually I just woohoo’d in my head. I’ve seized the chance to put up pre-orders for scheduled books up till April 2020.

First Magic (Faerene Apocalypse, #4) – Oct 2019

Blade Witch (Holiday novella) – Dec 2019

Space Specter (Interstellar Sheriff, #3) – Feb 2020

Rough Magic (Faerene Apocalypse, #5) – April 2020

After that, well, I’m thinking about my options. So many story ideas.

2020 is also a leap year! Have you heard of the tradition that women propose to men on Bachelor’s Day, February 29? I did the whole proposal thing one year. The guy said “No!” Or rather, he shuffled away awkwardly.

Before you feel sorry for me, he was a stranger. It was a fish and chips shop, and I was chatting with the owner and laughing about Bachelor’s Day, and I turned to the nearest man and asked him if he wanted to marry me. 20-year-olds do reckless things ๐Ÿ™‚

So with that embarrassing story out of the way, the other reason I like leap years is the Olympics. Tokyo Olympics start July 24. I love watching the gymnastics, but loathe all the swimming races. Australia does well in swimming comps, so it’s what’s shown a lot here. Splash, splash, yawn. Tour de France is also on in July. I’ll be wishing away the first half of 2020 at this rate!

If you’re interested in what I’m reading, I’m sharing the best of my Kindle Unlimited (Amazon’s lending library) finds on my Facebook page, Always Another Great Book. Among the gems are Vanessa Nelson’s fantasy novels (The Gathering), David Reiss’s superhero/villain Fid (Fid’s Crusade), and HDA Gordon’s British urban fantasy, The Magician’s Brother.

And since it’s already September, I’m going to start thinking about publishing trends for 2020. What subgenres do I predict will be hot? The explosion of magical schools/colleges/academies that proliferated in Kindle Unlimited took me by surprise, as did the number of military sci-fi novels. I’m wondering if ghosts will make a comeback. Lots to think about.

Do you have any predictions for 2020? Happy ones, I hope!

  1. Wow, Jenny, I am excited for and in awe of your publishing schedule. You are a writing powerhouse and I am a tad envious.

Wishing you nothing but wonderfulness for now and 2020.

Romantic suspense and cozies seem to be popular, but who knows what the new year will bring. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks D ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t think cozies ever go out of fashion – like cardigans! We always reach for their comfort. I’m wondering if cozies might genre blend, like they did with paranormal romance to create witch mysteries. So cozy space pirates? LOL

      • I know an Australian cozy author is planning a paranormal version (witches) which I think comes out next year. ๐Ÿ™‚ And why not cozy space pirates indeed. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I haven’t checked in with what’s going on for you in ages, Jenny, so clicked your post today from Twitter. Your publishing schedule scares the bejesus out of me! good luck with all that. You’ve always been prolific and obviously that hasn’t changed. I hope things are going well for you ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks Lily ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve been deep in the author den for ages. That’s good for the writing, less good for keeping up with everyone! Sending you loads of good writing/publishing/success karma.
